Web Design Mistakes That Drive Visitors Away
People who design their own websites instead of employing a web design company often make the same mistakes. Mistakes that you should avoid making include the following…
Do not center all your text and everything else on the web pages, because it looks amateurish. There is really no reason to design your website this way, especially when you consider that a full page left to right layout is always used for book and magazine text. When visitors are faced with a large amount of centered text, they think it looks odd and may click on their web browser’s back button because they simply are not used to the look of large chunks of text which has been centered.
Choosing background music for your site can create problems because first of all you will not find music which is satisfying to everyone and secondly the site will take much longer to load. Visitors may wait for the site to load, but they will soon leave if they are being forced to listen to music that they do not like. If you really think that music is necessary then make it optional by having a play button located in a prominent spot at the top of your site’s pages.
Do not use JavaScript for any critical elements of your web pages since about a fifth of all Web users are not able to or do not want to run JavaScript. If something prominent on your site is not working when someone visits it then those people seeing it will assume that you site is unprofessional or outdated as you cannot be bothered to fix the problems with it. Even if they have arrived at your website, if you use JavaScript you may lose 20 percent of your visitors within a few seconds.
Do not use flash for all or most of your website because search engines cannot read the flash content and your site will be given a lower ranking than sites with mostly text and images on them. But as long as you make certain there is a large amount of text included on your site, you do not have to leave flash out entirely. If you use a lot of flash anyhow, and get a low ranking, then you can forget about many visitors from Bing, Yahoo, and Google, which are the main search engines responsible for sending visitors to websites.

You have raised some good points. Many people who own flash websites ask me why their websites will not rank well in google, and im tired of telling people that google cannot view the text. I guess flash websites look good, but there is no need for full flash websites, maybe small sections but thats about it.
Superb article. Will sure use it on my site and refer it to our users.tnx
